5 of the Best Things to Do at Tobyhanna State Park
Hiking
More than 10 miles of scenic hiking trails await you at Tobyhanna State Park. For an easy yet picturesque hike, we recommend starting with the Lakeside Trail. The trail is 5.1 miles and closely follows the perimeter of the lake, offering excellent views along the way. The entire walk takes approximately 2.5 hours to complete and is relatively flat. This trail is also a popular spot for mountain biking!
The Range Trail is slightly more difficult. The 6.6-mile round-trip trek will take you through several wet and rocky areas. However, the challenge is well worth the views of the wetlands and boulder fields. If you prefer strenuous hike, we recommend the Frank Gantz Trail. Not for the faint of heart, this 3.2-mile trail requires hikers to “rock hop” in several areas. It’s a fantastic workout, plus you’ll see some great sights along the trail.
Swimming
If you’re looking for fun things to do in the Poconos in the summer, why not spend Memorial Day weekend at the lake? There is a wonderful sand beach on Tobyhanna Lake where visitors can enjoy sunbathing, swimming, boating, fishing and more. Lounge by the shoreline, play in the water, or cast your line into the depths of the 170-acre lake. The beach is open from the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend through mid-September from 8 a.m. until sunset.
Picnicking
Would you like to enjoy a day out in nature with your special someone? Tolbyhanna State Park is the perfect place to share a romantic picnic lunch under the trees. There are four different day use areas with picnic tables and charcoal grills. Whether you prefer a wide open field or an intimate, wooded setting, there are a variety of options to choose from.
Hunting
During hunting season, hunters and trappers can enjoy pursuing a variety of game here including white-tailed deer, black bear, squirrels, turkey, fox, coyote, and more. Dog training is also permitted in some areas of the park. Be sure to check the current DCNR and Pennsylvania Game Commission regulations if you plan to hunt while on vacation.
Other Year-Round Activities
Whether you are visiting in summer, winter, spring, or fall, you’ll find outdoor recreation every day of the year at Tobyhanna State Park! During the colder months, the park is a prime destination for ice fishing, snowmobiling, and ice skating. Fall is another great time to visit, as the Tobyhanna State Park fall foliage changes from bright green to vibrant yellows, oranges, and reds. It’s a truly magical sight to behold!
