History of the Theatre
Much like its theatre roots, The Shawnee Playhouse history is rich with stories. The old playhouse was built in 1904 by American Industrialist, C.C. Worthington. The, then, Worthington Hall was a hub for local Deleware actors and actresses and it even landed a regular spot on the town’s radio station. When World War II climbed to its height in 1942, the community favorite fell into obsolescence.
In 1978, the Kirkwood Family purchased The Shawnee Resort, including the playhouse. They immediately began renovations on the 75-year-old building and successfully earned it the prestigious Phoenix Award. Sadly, in 1985 an arsonist burned the building to the ground, but with the backing of the Shawnee community, the theatre was rebuilt and stands as the heart of Shawnee today.
