GET THE GUIDEHere’s What You Need to Know About RAW Urban Winery
RAW Urban Winery, named after the owner’s two sons Rowan and Asher, provides a new take on traditional wineries. The Downtown Stroudsburg tasting room currently offers six housemade wines and four homebrewed hard ciders. Whether you’re strolling the downtown streets or planning the ultimate Eastern Pennsylvania wine tour, RAW deserves a visit during your next trip.
What is an Urban Winery?
By definition, an urban winery is one that grows its grape remotely and transports them to its primary location within city limits to create its wine. Rowan Asher Winery (RAW) sources its fruits from local farmers to create their fabulous wines and ciders just steps from where you taste them.
Much like a microbrewery, an urban winery crafts wine in small batches. This type of winemaking is capable of producing wide ranges of wine (and ciders) because it is not tied to its own grapes in the way a traditional vineyard is.
RAW’s Wines
RAW Winery endearingly lends us a piece of personal history through their wine list. Each of the six carefully crafted wines represents something of importance in the winemakers’ lives.
“Misty Love” is a National Gold Medal Award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon. The full-bodied blend combines Cabernet, Malbec, and Carmenere in an oak barrel for a boldly fruity experience finishing with a little bit of spice.
The “98” Malbec is named for the year the winery owners were wed. The smokey red is the perfect complement to a chilly, Pocono night. It combines hints of leather violet, tobacco, chocolate, and blueberry for a robust “cheers.”
The winery boasts one of the most popular Moscatos in the region along with a crisp Pinot Grigio, a South African Reserve Blend, and special Chianti-like table wine. Stop into either Stroudsburg location to try them all.
RAW’s Hard Ciders
Hard cider—not quite a wine, not quite a beer. RAW’s hard ciders implement the freshest elements of fruits and florals.
Try the “Indian Head” for an organic mixture of chamomile and apples. Indulge in the “Oaky O’Shea” which is aged in a whiskey barrel and later blended with local syrup. The winery even created their own twist on a traditional copper mug, Moscow Mule with the “Pocono Mule” that combines fresh ginger, lime juice, Pinot Grigio, and hard cider—yum.
