Lacawac Sanctuary

3 of the Best Things to Do at the Lacawac Sanctuary

Whether you want to get into nature or just get away from it all, Lacawac Sanctuary is the place to do it. More than five hundred acres of land and a pristine glacier lake make it one of the most peaceful places you’ll ever visit.

The Lacawac Sanctuary

The Lacawac Sanctuary’s history includes connections to the early colonial logging and coal industries, as well as a summer retreat called Connell Park. Lacawac Sanctuary was afforded National Landmark status in 1968, as its unpolluted glacier lake is an invaluable resource to scientists and conservationists.

Today, Lacawac Sanctuary serves as a resource to educate the public about nature conservation and eco-systems, as well as providing an incredibly beautiful and untouched destination for nature lovers.

While there’s lots to do and love at Lacawac Sanctuary, here are three of the best things:

1. Rejuvenate with a Hike

The hiking trails at the Lacawac Sanctuary vary in length, but all offer unparalleled beauty and serenity. The easy, one-mile Historic Great Camp Trail takes you to the Watres Lodge and the Lake Lacawac dock. The Lake Lacawac Trail is a 1.1-mile moderate trail that leads to the glacial lake. The three-mile Big Lake Trail passes Heron and Golden Ponds. Then, it loops around near the shore of Lake Wallenpaupack. Check out the Lacawac Sanctuary trail map to see all the trails that are offered.

2. Educate Yourself at the Coulter Visitor Center

To truly appreciate the surroundings, be sure to stop by the Visitor’s Center to get information on area flora, fauna, and wildlife. You’ll enjoy visiting the science lab, as well as the native plants garden.

3. Have a Blast at an Event

From a Moonlit Paddle to a New Year’s Snow Shoe Hike, there’s always something fun happening at Lacawac Sanctuary. And depending on when you visit, you might also get to catch the Summer Solstice celebration, the Lake to Lake 8K Trail Run, the Farm to Plate dinner, or even a spring or holiday tea party.
